 Total porosity, about 95%

 Big specific surface area, about 200 m2/g

High liquid binding ability, 600-800 l/m3

Bedding peat in broiler houses

• Use of peat began more than 30 years ago and it started to replace wood shavings and saw dust

• At present about 90 % of round 300 broiler farms in Finland use peat as bedding material

• Thickness of bedding layer has been reduced from earlier 10 cm to 2-3 cm today. (New handling tehnique and
machinery) influence on the costs but also on the broiler house atmosphere and properties of the manure

• The health of birds generally and especially that of breast
and feet benefit from smooth and acidic peat moss
