As the summer comes to an end, it is time to think about fall gardening and landscape care. Soon, the days will be short and the leaves will be falling from the trees. To be prepared, you should get your fall gardening kit together shortly. Here is a guide to the most important tools for fall gardening.

Leaf Rakes: Raking is vital to maintaining a tidy lawn once the tree leaves fall. There are several types of lawn rakes that you can choose for maintaining your lawn. Rakes vary by material and size. If you want a rake that will last, purchase a rake with metal tines. Rakes with plastic tines will do the job if you have a small lawn without a large buildup of leaves, but metal rakes are built to last.

Broadforks: Many home gardeners have never heard of or used broadforks, but these can be excellent fall gardening tools if used properly.  These handy tools, also known as U-bar diggers, are used to loosen soil to prepare it for planting, laying compost, or mulching. This is an important fall gardening tool needed to prepare the soil for mulching in anticipation of the winter cold and ice. To use a broadfork, grasp your hands around the two handles as if they are ski poles. Next, step on one side of the crossbar using all of your body weight and then step on the other side of the crossbar until  the tines are under the soil. Loosen the soil in a rhythmic rowing motion.

Mulch Forks: A mulch fork will help you move large loads of mulch with each scoop. You will need a lot of mulch to properly cover your soil for the winter to protect it from the freezing cold and the elements. Mulch forks also come in several varieties, but a large mulch fork with metal tines is the best for this job. Mulch forks with metal tines are durable and often come with long warranties to ensure their quality over the years.

Shovels: A shovel is handy for all types of gardening. It can be used to lift and carry loads of soil or mulch, and it can be used to dig holes to plant shrubs or trees. For fall gardening, metal shovels in varying sizes are ideal. These will be especially handy if you are planning on planting any crops that will be harvested during the winter.
